Round 6: Dana White says Robert Whittaker can be the Australian Conor McGregor
Dana White has named Robert Whittaker the ‘Next Big Thing’ of the UFC middleweight division, saying: “We’ve had Chris Weidman, Luke Rockhold … this kid really could be next”.
In an Australian exclusive, White has outed 25-year-old Whittaker as the young fighter most capable of winning UFC gold, “making millions” and doing for MMA in Australia what megastar Conor McGregor has in Ireland.
While the UFC president was careful not to directly link the pair — “it would be tough to compare anyone with Conor” — he insisted Whittaker would use his next fight, on the main card of UFC 197, to really announce himself to American fight fans.
“Looking at the middleweight division, Robert Whittaker could be Chris Weidman or Luke Rockhold,’’ White said. “He could be the next one of them.
“They’re the champion and No. 1 contender. They’ve both made millions of dollars, life changing money. And absolutely Robert could be next.
“The guy’s actually become one of my favourite fighters.
